Driving a Stick: A Lost Art

Sun Sep 23, 2007, 8:46 PM
I can count the number of people I know who can drive a manual transmission on one hand. It really is a dying skill, even the driving school I go to only has automatics. Obviously, most people prefer automatics because they're SO much easier to handle, but I think it's preferable to know how to drive both just in case you, you know, go to a party with someone driving a manual and then they get hammered and you have to drive home.

Anyway, my mom's car is a stick, so obviously I have to learn how to drive it if I ever want to go anywhere without depending on her, so I've been dying to learn for a while. So my step-dad offered to teach me (if my mom tried to teach me, I would NOT survive it). So he took me to a parking lot with my mom's car and taught me to let the clutch in and out and how to not stall and everything. Of course, I stalled about a gazillion times, but I managed to not grind the gears. And by the end, I could start and stop and shift without lurching too much! HOORAY! And then he was like, 'ok, let's head home.'

Him: Ready to go home? You did a good job today.
Me: Yeah, ok. Thanks for teaching me!
Him: Sure! Ok, now drive us home.
Me: (chokes) WHAT?!
Him: Yeah, come on! You'll be fine!
Me: Ok...

So I drove home. On a stick-shift. My first time driving in traffic. And you know what? It wasn't so bad! I'm glad I can drive both a manual and automatic transmission, it'll be useful in the future, I'm sure.

There's my exciting story for today.

Behold: The Wonder that is Tech

Mon Sep 17, 2007, 7:29 PM
For all those unfortunately ignorant people out there who have never been exposed to the "temptress inside the LGI", I'm sorry. Your life is, of course, incomplete, and will continue to be so until you have experienced the wonder that is Tech.

Ok, so maybe I'm making it sound a little bit more wonderful and...well, religiously fanatical than it is, but that's my duty as a Techie. I'm sure our Techmaster, Palestine would agree with me. Yes, people, that is his name: Palestine. Except not really, that's just his Tech name, but whatever. There's also Sanchez, Crazy Monkey, 10, Sketchy Nick, Ariadne, Rabbit (or Sammy Sunshine) and...I think that's it. I mean, there are other Techies, but we call them by their birthnames so I'm not gonna post that all over the internet. Call me crazy, but things happen sometimes.

Anyway, I digress. Today was the "first day" (which, this being Tech, it wasn't really) for the newcomers. This means that Palestine gave his usual "speech", introduced everyone, talked about what we do (build the set for the plays), the year to come, blah, blah, blah. Most of us were reading the newspaper. We respect our leader so! Our Painting Mistress has more authority than he does, actually :P So, anyway, we mostly did power tool demonstrations for two hours, which was boring because I already know how to use a screwgun, chopsaw, jigsaw, table saw, grinder (absolutely my favorite), power sander, etc. I was sad at first because one of our (us being my friends a.k.a. the Freshmen... or Used-To-Be-Freshmen) favorite actors didn't get into the play, but then he joined Tech and we were like, "Hah, screw acting, we get him for TECH!"

That's my story for today. It could be a helluva lot longer, but then you probably wouldn't read it. Alors, bon soir, tout le monde!

My 1st journal

Fri Sep 14, 2007, 7:24 PM
Hello. My life isn't that interesting, but you're welcome to read about it. As you might have read from my last journal entry, I created this account just to display pictures from Canoe Island French Camp, but now I'm thinking I'll just upload a bunch of pictures, leave it at that, and use this as my blog-type-thing. I kinda feel bad about having a DA account and not being a hardcore deviant artist, but whatever.

Any of you having read Superdocious007's last journal entry, i'll probably relate to a lot of the same things. She's one of my best friends and we have a lot of the same teachers (cough...Mr. Seemurderer).

So...a breakdown of my day...
Well, this morning, I ran around for about two hours, pretending to be athletic in lifetime sports, then I went to H. Algebra, which wasn't that bad. Then at lunch, I did my English homework, then went to English afterwards, where we spent the entire period talking about our summers. Individually. One at a time. It was completely pointless!! I had a great time.

These weird guys have been sitting with us at lunch sometimes. I don't even freaking know who they ARE! I know one's name is Nick, but I have no idea why he's sitting with us or how he knows us or anything. His friend, I have no idea what HIS name is, he's even weirder. Nick is actually pretty nice, but it still really confuses me why he's hanging out with us. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO YOU ARE, YOU FREAK! But it's fine, they're ok company.

Canoe Island French Camp

Mon Aug 13, 2007, 6:05 PM
Hello, all. I created this DA account so that I could show friends across the country pictures from Canoe Island without having to email them...which would take my computer about a week. Here's some pictures from third session this year, enjoy!
